Olive Trees

About Olive Trees

While our main focus is citrus, we also grow a small range of olive tree varieties that can thrive in most of Australia’s climate regions. Olives can be relatively low maintenance and drought tolerant, which makes them suited to the little amount of rain we usually see.

They prefer a hot, dry climate similar to what you’d find in the Mediterranean. As a full sun tree, olives should always live outdoors as they’re particularly susceptible to fungal diseases if kept inside.

They are a lovely looking tree with attractive, narrow foliage that ranges from dark green and silvery, to light green, depending on the variety. With regular trimming and feeding, they can grow quite dense and provide some good screening.

When mature, olive trees can produce an amazing amount of fruit that can be used for pickling or oil pressing. Maturity tends to be between 8 – 10 years of age, though you will see smaller or more sporadic crops before then. Olive trees will fruit earlier and with larger crops if they have other varieties nearby.

The fruit starts out green and ages to mottled purple-black colour. When buying green olives from the grocery store, they would have been picked while still green, then pickled, whereas black olives were left on the tree longer before being pickled.
