Description
Dwarf Cumquat Calamansi (Citrofortunella Microcarpa)
The Calamansi cumquat (also known as the Calamondin in Australia) is typically found throughout parts of Asia, particularly in the Philippines. It’s also, by far, the most popular cumquat grown in Australia. They’re a nice, bushy tree with dense foliage that’s easy to prune and shape, making it a good pot specimen. Regular tip pruning encourages a denser growth habit which also makes them quite effective as a semi-formal hedge or screen.
Typically, in warmer climates throughout Asia, the fruit tends to remain green, though the cooler temperatures in Australia are what causes them to turn orange here.
Although the fruit can be eaten straight from the tree, it can be quite sour and is usually used to make preserves, jams or as flavouring in beverages, both alcoholic or otherwise. It’s used extensively throughout Asia, particularly the Philippines, in dressings and marinades.
