Frequently Asked Questions

You must be here because you have questions! We’ve listed a few of the ones we get most often, so have a little gander and see if we’ve got the answers. If not, please reach out to us! We might just add your question here, too!

General Nursery Information and Services

Are you open to the public?

We are! We have a small retail area near our front office that you can browse.

For directions and opening hours click here.

Do you have a cafe on-site?

Sadly, no cafe. We’re predominantly a production/growing nursery which leaves very little room for coffee shops (much to our staff’s great sadness).

Luckily, there are several lovely cafes nearby, so be sure to look around when visiting Dural!

What kind of payment types do you accept? Cash? Card?

We accept cash and all card payments. We have a CommBank EFTPOS machine on-site that supports card tap, insert, or swipe.

Is there a public bathroom on-site?

We have our staff bathroom on-site that customers can use when needed.

Do you do multi-graft citrus? (two varieties in one tree)

At this time, we don’t do multi-grafted citrus.

We’ve found, over time, multi-grafted citrus trees don’t result in equal longevity for both varieties. While there’s nothing wrong with this method, unless both varieties have a very similar growth habit and vigor, it’s not unusual for one to overtake the other, leaving you with just one type of citrus.

A way of getting around this is by planting two trees in the same hole in the ground. It can also be done with a very large pot, too.

While we don’t multi-graft our own trees, if you’d like one done for you, we can help out. See the question below for info about custom grafting.

Do you offer custom grafting services?

Yes, we do. If you have an amazing old tree you’d like to propagate, we can graft it onto one of our rootstocks for you.

We generally do all our grafting from December – February when it’s really hot. Get in touch before or during that time of year to discuss your next steps.

Please note, this is dependent on how much rootstock we have available at the time.

Do you sell gardening supplies and accessories?

As we’re predominantly a production nursery, we don’t sell many gardening supplies or accessories.

We have a very limited selection of soil & fertiliser, plain black nursery pots, and a small range of pest & disease control available for sale in our office.

Do you have anyone there who can come plant or prune trees in my yard?

We’re a very small team with lots to do around the nursery, so house calls are not possible.

Can you recommend landscaping or tree lopping services?

At this stage, no. There are so many of regions and suburbs to cover with these services, it’s hard to make recommendations. Google and word-of-mouth are often your best friend when looking for help with planting, pruning, and maintenance.

I’m buying a tree as a gift; do you offer gift wrapping services?

Unfortunately, we cannot offer gift wrapping options at this time. Also, we may be biased, but we think our trees are cute enough without wrapping. 🙂

Do you make or sell olive bonbonnieres?

Unfortunately, we don’t make or sell olive (or any) bombonnieres. While we do propagate young olives, we grow them in larger pots that aren’t very practical for bombonniere purposes.

I drove by and saw some big trees full of fruit at your nursery, can I pick the fruit?

People are welcome to pick fruit from our established citrus trees at the nursery. To do this, we do ask for a donation to a charity we support.

You can read about the Variety Bash Children’s Charity here.

For your safety, please see us in the office and ask before picking fruit! We can show you which fruit are ripe, provide instructions on how to pick to ensure the trees aren’t damaged, and give info on when the trees were last sprayed.

How it works:
We will supply a 200mm pot for you to fill up. Each pot of fruit is a $5 donation.
Example:
1 full pot = $5 donation
2 full pots = $10 donation

Are there places my kids and I can wander at your nursery?

For your safety, we don’t allow visitors to wander further than our designated retail spaces.

We’re a busy production nursery and aside from our irrigation systems to be careful around, there are frequently tractors and work vehicles moving about as well.

If we don’t have something in our retail area, one of our lovely staff will happily go find it in the paddocks, or perhaps even take you for a little ride in our fabulous Miss Jane golf cart.

Can I bring my dog to your nursery?

Yes! We love dogs. Bring your fuzzy friend, we just ask they’re kept on leash and not left unattended, just so they don’t eat anything harmful to them.

Please note, we have our own dogs with us at the nursery, so if yours is not comfortable around others, it may be best to leave them in the car while you shop.

I’m after some trees, but I don’t need them just yet; can you hold stock for me?

We can hold stock at our nursery for up to 7 days on our aptly named “Pick-up Wall” where we hand-water your stock.

We’d love to do more, but we don’t have the space or staff to accommodate more than a week, especially during busy periods. We’re a small nursery, so our stock gets moved around quite frequently to make room for more production and we don’t want anyone’s stock to get misplaced during these moves.

You used to sell grapevines, but I can’t see them on your site anymore. Why?

We no longer sell grapevines and a teeny bug called Grape Phylloxera is to blame for that.

Long story short, it’s the world’s worst grapevine pest. It lives and feeds on grapevines which have almost no tolerance to it, causing them to die.

The greater Sydney region (where we’re located) is NOT a phylloxera-free zone. So, to reduce the risk of affected soil or grapevines being moved into our ‘clean zones’, like the Hunter region, we’ve decided not to sell them any longer.

If you’re curious, you can read a bit more here.

Do you still sell beekeeping supplies?

We have an extremely limited range of beekeeping supplies remaining, but we will not be restocking these once they are gone.

Citrus Help & Advice Questions

I just bought a citrus tree, what comes next?

Whether you visit the nursery in person or buy online, we provide a handy little cheat sheet to help get you started caring for the new tree(s) in your life.

It covers our recommendations about planting, care, and more.

The information is also on our website, too!

Check out our Help & Advice section or jump directly to our Citrus FAQ page!

I think my citrus tree has a problem; can you help me identify it?

We can certainly try! First, take a look at our help & advice section. We’ve got some info on bugs and diseases that might look similar to your concern.

Citrus Pests – The Usual Suspects

Citrus Diseases – What to look out for

We’ve seen a LOT of citrus growing quirks over the years, and many issues present similarly, so the first thing we’ll do is ask you for photos. You can send them directly to our email.

Things to include in your photos:

  • A clear close up of the problem area (leaves, branches, etc.)
  • A good, clear shot of the entire tree and where it is in your yard or balcony
  • The soil around the base of your tree
  • Any insects you notice on the tree
There are stink bugs on my tree! I hate them!

We hear you. We hate stink bugs, too! We do have a few recommendations on how to control them.

You can read about that in our Citrus Pest Page here.

What’s the size difference between 200mm vs 400mm citrus trees?

The difference between the two may not sound like much, but for citrus, it’s quite a bit.

200mm citrus: 2 – 2.5 years old, 40cm – 1m tall
400mm citrus: 4 – 6 years old, 60cm – 1.5m tall

Height will always vary greatly depending on the variety because some are just much more vigorous than others.

The main difference between the two sizes is age, width of trunk and branches, and the ability to bear fruit safely. While we recommend removing any fruit from our 200mm stock while it’s so young, our 400mm stock is already fruit bearing age and size.

Do you have trees more advanced than 400mm?

Often, we’ll have a range of 500mm trees available for citrus and olive trees.

As always, they’ll vary in height depending on variety, weather, and when they were last trimmed.

At times, we may even have larger trees, though availability can be limited. If you’re interested in larger citrus or some fully grown, ex-ground olive trees, get in touch!

Can you help me identify a tree or fruit variety?

We’ll do our best! Bring us some fruit or send us photos and we’ll take a look for you.

Many varieties are easy to distinguish, but others are a little tricky due to how many different strains exist, both currently and historically.

Trees and fruit can change significantly depending on when and where they’re planted, the growing method used (seedling, cutting grown, or grafted), or the age of the tree, so while we can’t promise we’ll always know the answer, we’ll give it our best shot.

Online Orders & Delivery Information

Does Engall’s Nursery deliver?

Yes! We have an online shop that you can browse, or you can call up and place an order over the phone with us.

Where in Australia do you ship your trees?

With Australia Post, we can ship across New South Wales, ACT, Queensland and Victoria.

Due to quarantine restrictions, we are not able to send trees to Western Australia, Tasmania, or the Northern Territory.

A recent Emergency Order regarding Red Imported Fire Ants means we can no longer deliver trees to South Australia for the time being.

What carrier do you use to ship your trees?

We use Australia Post to ship our trees. Our online shop automatically calculates shipping when you enter your address. We use the same calculator for orders placed over the phone.

For the Sydney metro region, we can also arrange a courier for larger items or larger orders of 200mm trees (5+ trees or so).

How long will it take for my tree to arrive?

This varies greatly depending on your location. For most metro areas, Australia Post’s usual estimate is between 3 – 8 business days. For regional suburbs, it can take longer.

If you’d like a better estimate, jump onto the Australia Post postage calculator to get an ETA from us in Dural, NSW, to your exact suburb.

What kind of trees can you ship?

In short, we can ship most trees in our 200mm square pot range as they’re the only ones that fit within Australia Post’s shipping restrictions.

This is typically our citrus range, but also includes a limited variety of other trees like olives. Our online shop is stocked only with trees we can ship via Australia Post.

What if I want to buy roses?

Well! We can ship two types of roses; bush and patio standards. These are both in 200mm pots, but we can only ship them when they’re leafless and dormant (at the tail end of winter).

Once they sprout leaves, they become too bushy and a bit too delicate to ship.

Rose shipping would be a special request, so please reach out to us for more information.

What if I want to buy larger fruit trees?

We can ship larger stock within the Sydney Metro region using a same day plant courier.

Larger stock includes our advanced citrus and olive trees, along with our deciduous fruit tree range (apples, peaches, etc.). These trees are in bigger pots and tend to be quite tall and wide, so the safest travel option for them is pick-up, or courier.

Our same day courier is very reliable and just an all-round great bloke. Shipping cost is dependent on your location, the amount and size of trees, as well as how much van space your order takes up.

For more information or to get a shipping quote, get in touch!

Is it even safe to send a tree in the mail?

When buying anything online, there’s always a risk of accidents happening, but we do our best to ensure our trees leave the nursery safely.

We use a specialised box with fold-in tabs designed to keep our 200mm pots from moving around and tipping upside down in transit.

Each tree is bagged to keep the soil in, then boxed individually, but we can combine 2 boxes together which allows us to ship orders with multiple items.

Box dimensions:  22cm x 22cm x 100cm (we may need to trim trees to fit at times)

Please note: Orders with multiple items typically incur additional shipping costs.

Can you promise my tree will arrive safely?

Unfortunately, we can’t make that promise. Once your lovely trees leave our nursery, they’re in the hands of Australia Post.

While they do their best to handle items with care, service can differ heavily depending on your region.

We pack our trees as safely as we can while trying not to harm the branches, but there’s always a chance the box could get damaged in transit.

What happens if my tree arrives and it’s damaged?

If your tree arrives damaged, please tell us immediately! We can lodge a complaint from our end, but Australia Post requires the receiver (that’s you) to present all damaged items to their local LPO for investigation.

They will also request that you fill out an official complaint form that may entitle you to a postage reimbursement from Australia Post.

We’ll also ask that you send through some photos to us. We’ll do our best to assess the damage and determine if and how your tree can be nursed back to health. We have seen trees recover beautifully, even after longer transit times up to 2 weeks, so don’t lose hope!

When will you ship my tree? I’m excited!

We do our post office runs from Monday – Wednesday. We try to avoid shipping later in the week to reduce the likelihood of trees sitting in post vans or depots over the weekend.

What do I do once my tree arrives?

Check the soil! We water regularly, including before shipping, but depending on the weather and how long your tree has been in transit, you’ll likely have to water it well on arrival.

Find a nice spot in partial sun so it can start gently recovering from its journey, then move it to full sun once it’s had a few days to settle.

If your tree took a little longer in transit, we’d suggest giving it some extra time to settle before transplanting into the ground or a new pot. You can also water it with Seasol which will help stimulate the roots and give your tree a bit of an easier time recovering.

Will public holidays affect the shipping time of my tree?

The short answer is: yes, probably.

We generally anticipate delays when shipping before or after public holidays, but it should add no more than a few days to Australia Post’s shipping estimate for your region.

During the December holiday period, we follow the final lodgment guidelines issued by Australia Post. These estimates are updated annually, but when available, we’ll include them in our FAQ section to help you.

If you have any questions around this, feel free to get in touch to discuss.
