Dwarf Washington Navel (Citrus sinensis ‘Washington Navel’)
The Washington Navel is the oldest and one of the most popular backyard oranges in Australia, but it’s also grown worldwide, with a great many coming out of California. A reasonably compact tree, it can be quite happily pruned to shape. When planted in the ground, the dwarf Washington can grow anywhere from 1.5 – 2m tall over its lifespan. As a dwarf, however, it can definitely live happily in a nice large pot that’ll allow it to get close to its full height.
These navels can start to ripen from mid-winter onwards and form a medium or large fruit, but the size can vary a little depending on the quantity of the fruit set. When mature, the trees can produce a good amount of fruit, you may have luck encouraging larger fruit by thinning out some of the crop. The skin is relatively easy to peel and remove and have a nice dense flesh that’s sweet, juicy, and seedless, making it perfect for snacking. It can be juiced as well, but you may need quite a few oranges to achieve a decent amount. Although the juice has good flavour, it doesn’t tend keep well. If juice is your primary goal for an orange, a Valencia might be a better option.
We also have larger trees available. Get in touch for details.
