The Calamondin cumquat is a little fruit with many names depending on where one might be from. It’s sometimes referred to as ‘the Australian cumquat’ and ‘Calamansi’ to name a few popular ones.
It’s a highly decorative tree with lovely, dense foliage and rounded leaves which can be a little on the smaller side compared to other citrus.
The fruit is small and round, though it can sometimes get to the size of a golf ball. The flavour is quite tart, so it’s predominantly used to make preserves or as flavouring for sauces, dressings and drinks.
It’s quite a prolific producer as well, often with several fruit and flowers on the tree at the same time, so regular feeding is definitely recommended to ensure the performance of this tree remains consistent and strong.
Additionally, keep an eye on the branches. This small fruit is deceptively heavy, so consider thinning out any branches with big loads of fruit to avoid them snapping.
In general, the Calamondin can be quite a vigorous grower, reaching 4 – 6m tall in good conditions, though they do respond well to pruning and make a good-looking hedging option, or they can live happily in a pot as a topiary tree.
