Description

(Citrus limon ‘Lisbon’)

Lisbons are the most common commercially grown lemon in Australia thanks in part to their long-lasting, but thin skin, which makes them understandably popular.
They’re believed to have originated in Portugal from a local variety grown there. Interestingly enough, it’s not known by the name ‘lisbon’ in Portugal.  The particular strain we grow is the Limoneira, which results in a lemon of lovely quality.

They have very good shelf life, which is convenient considering they tend to produce one major crop per year without much staggering between when the fruit ripens. They can, at times, produce a few lemons through the summer, though it’s somewhat less likely than some of its lemon cousins.  They have a high juice content with good acidity, so they’re great for cooking, baking, and making beverages like a classically refreshing lemonade.

As a tree, they’re quite a vigorous tree when planted in ideal conditions, growing anywhere from 6 – 7m tall.
They’re also one of the quicker growing citrus trees, however they can be quite thorny, so do be careful when harvesting.
