Description
Seville Orange (Citrus Aurantium)
The Seville orange is an extremely historical variety that shares its name with the city of Seville in Spain, where dozens upon dozens of these trees can be seen lining the streets and planted greenspaces across the city. They’re prized as an ornamental tree for a very long time, thanks to their beautiful, lush green growth and deep orange fruit. It’s also quite a vigorous tree, as far as citrus trees go, and can be slightly more frost-hardy than others.
The tree can get quite tall in their lifetime, from about 4 – 6m or higher in ideal conditions.
The Seville is also widely referred to as the ‘Bitter Orange’ which, as the name suggests, is due to the fruit being quite sour. While it may not be pleasant for eating right off the tree, the fruit is perfect for cooking purposes, flavouring drinks, or making marmalades and preserves.
