Description
Yuzu (Citrus junos)
Originating in Japan, the Yuzu’s popularity is increasing in Australia as interest in Korean and Japanese food grows. As they can be sometimes difficult to find in fruit shops, it’s become much more practical to just grow one in the home garden.
It’s a reasonably vigorous tree, growing from 3 – 6m in good conditions. The leaves are a long and elegant deep green and have distinct petiole at the base, offering a little bit of visual variety amongst other citrus trees. Be warned, however! Yuzu trees can be incredibly spikey, so be careful when pruning and caring for them.
The flavour of fruit is tart and bitter but with a lovely and almost sweet-smelling fragrance that’s sometimes described as being somewhere between a grapefruit and a mandarin. Depending on climate, the Yuzu fruit can ripen anywhere from April through to August or September. While it’s not traditionally eaten fresh, both the zest and juice can be used in a variety of drinks and other culinary delights.
We also have a dwarf yuzu available for pots and smaller spaces. Check it out here.
