Description
(Citrus reticulata ‘Shiranui’)
The Shiranui mandarin, also known Dekopon, is a seriously impressive fruit tree. The fruit itself can get pretty massive, with a distinct bump forming at the stem which resembles a super cute topknot hairdo.
It may even look slightly familiar to a variety you’ve noticed in the grocery store, too!
As a tree is, it’s a good grower with a nice, dense growth habit that makes it a pretty and practical option for a feature tree in the garden.
At maturity, it will range in height from 1.5m up to 2.5m. Like other dwarf varieties, the Shiranui will be equally at home in the ground or a nice, big pot on a sunny balcony.
The fruit is considered large (or extra-large) in size, with a slightly bumpy skin texture. Even as a dwarf, the fruit will be the same size as its full-size counterpart, it’ll just be the tree itself which will stay smaller.
Expect to pay close attention to the fruit and branches with your shiranui! Since the fruit can be big and heavy, you may wish to support heavily laden branches, or even remove some of the crop as well, in the interest of preserving its branches.
As with many other mandarin varieties, fruit size will always vary depending on the season and even the amount of fruit per crop.
Often, smaller crops can mean bigger fruit, while larger crops can lead to smaller fruit.
They’re relatively easy to peel as well, with nice, big segments and a sweet and juicy flavour.
An ideal late harvesting option for the home garden or balcony.
