Description

(Citrus reticulata x medica)

The Rangpur Lime is an interesting citrus that goes by many names across the world, including ‘Lemandarin’, ‘Sylhet’, ‘canton-lemon’, and ‘hime-lemon’.
Looking at these names, you may have begun to suspect the Rangpur may not even really a lime at all, and you’d be correct!

It’s a hybrid between a mandarin and a lemon or citron. Despite this, it does have an oddly strong ‘lime’ scent and flavour, hence its most common name of ‘rangpur lime’.

As a tree, it’s a vigorous grower, with a bit of a wider habit to it. In ideal conditions, it can reach heights of 3 – 4m tall, though it can be pruned to stay shorter and bushier if desired.
They can be a little more cold-tolerant than other citrus varieties, though they grow just as well in the heat, much like all other citrus do.

When ripe, the fruit is typically orange on the inside while the outside can be either green or orange if in cooler areas. It tends to be easier to peel with relatively defined segments, thanks to its mandarin heritage.
They’re quite juicy and, in terms of flavour profile, they’re quite tart with pretty high acidity. It’s ideally suited to use in the kitchen as a lemon or lime substitute, especially if you’re looking for something a little different.
The leaves also have a decently strong ‘lime’ scent to them and can be used similarly to kaffir lime leaves in cooking.

The harvest season is quite long, too. You’ll often find fruit ripening from May through to September, when the tree is mature.
