Mandarin Engall’s Seedless (Citrus unshui ‘Okitsu’)
The Robbie Engall’s Seedless mandarin is variety of Satsuma mandarin selected by the late Robbie Engall. Being a Satsuma, it can tolerate cooler temperatures quite well. The tree itself has a lovely, slightly drooping growth habit and stays relatively compact for a full-size tree, getting to an approximate height of around 2 – 3m in its lifetime. Its smaller size makes it a great option for smaller yard spaces or on a balcony in a pot. It’s a strong grower and reliable producer, when planted in ideal conditions with regular care and feeding.
Its fruit forms a puffy skin that’s quite separate from its inner flesh so it’s very easy to peel and eat. Depending on the weather, the fruit can start to ripen from mid to late April, which is nice and early in the year. Thanks to this early harvest time, it makes a great companion for other mandarins, like the Imperial or Emperor, which tend to ripen a little later in the season.
