Description
Meyer Lemon (Citrus limon ‘Meyer’)
The Meyer Lemon is thought to be a hybrid lemon due to the fact that it’s less acidic than its other lemon variety counterparts. It’s a smaller tree, growing from 2.5-3m tall with a compact growth habit and it can produce multiple crops throughout the year when it’s mature and planted in ideal conditions. Additionally, the Meyer lemon is one of the most cold-tolerant lemons out there. While it doesn’t love the frost, it can handle the cooler winters of coastal NSW.
The fruit is medium sized and ripens to a lovely, deep golden yellow on the tree. Meyer’s tend to form a thinner, softer skin which makes them very easy to squeeze and juice, though it does reduce their shelf life, so it’s best to use them quickly after harvesting. They do have an abundance of juice, though due to its slightly less acidic nature, it may not be suitable for certain recipes! For example, using Meyer lemon juice in a cheesecake may prevent it setting, since the acidity in typical lemon juice is what helps with this process.
